Purpose

A competition built around real engineering

The Shanghai Robot Challenge brings three competition programmes together under one banner so that a school can enter its youngest beginners and its most advanced engineers in the same season.

Events are deliberately varied in what they test. Some reward autonomous precision — tracking a line, finding a green and putting a golf ball, collecting pucks against the clock. Others reward driver skill and team strategy, like Robot Rugby and Drone Soccer. Free Style rewards pure invention, and RC.CODE tests algorithmic thinking with no robot at all.

Every event is published with an official rulebook, so teams know exactly what they are building toward.

Teacher & coach training

Teacher training is arranged for every event on the programme, as set out in the official planning document.

Rules training
Walkthroughs of the rules and evaluation criteria for each event entered.
Basic solutions
Reference Lego solutions, onsite demonstrations and curriculum frameworks.
Specialist support
Drone Soccer arranges senior drone instructors in Shanghai if the event is selected.

Unknown Mission provides question banks for daily teaching in the Junior division; the Senior division is noted as highly challenging and recommends three or more years of programming and structural experience.

Age groups are set per event. Divisions run from Grade 3 and below on the ROBOBOOM Junior events through Junior, Senior and Adult on the traditional programme. Each challenge page lists the groups defined in its rulebook.

Eighteen events: twelve RobotChallenge Traditional Events (RC-001 to RC-012), three RC.CODE programming events, and three ROBOBOOM Junior events (RB-001 to RB-003). Browse them all in the challenge explorer.

It depends on the event — commonly official Lego series or VEX IQ kits, with VEX EDR for Senior Puck Collect, a micro:bit control core for Push Shooting, and three drones per team for Drone Soccer. Free Style has no equipment restrictions. Mini Sumo equipment is being confirmed.
